Western Digital My Passport Edge for Mac Review
by Jonathan Gordon
Does this hard drive’s Mac-friendly features and design give it the edge against its rivals?
Key Features • 500GB storage • USB 2.0/3.0 • Slimline design
Western Digital’s My Passport Edge offers a great storage option for any Mac user on the go. With a slim, 11mm, all-metal casing, this hard drive feels strong and sturdy but is small enough to take with you on the road. The drive looks fantastic too and the anodised aluminium finish means it will fit in perfectly beside your MacBook Pro.
It’s Mac formatted out of the box so there’s no mucking about with Disk Utility, and it even offers password and encryption options to protect all your important data. The drive boasts USB 3.0 and 2.0 compatibility so you’ll only need one drive for all your devices and, when connected via USB 3.0, the My Passport Edge offers some pretty fast transfer speeds.

It’s Time Machine-compatible so could make a good backup drive, but with just 500GB of storage, it might not be large enough for a full system backup. And, while USB 3.0 is fast, the lack of a Thunderbolt connection means your transfers won’t be as fast as they could be. The price is a little high for a drive of this capacity, but the build quality and overall feel make this drive seem worth every penny.
